Medical Doctor (MBChB) in 1996 – MEDUNSA; Master of Philosophy (Values and Policy Studies) at Stellenbosch University (MPhil 2001)

Clinical Medicine Experience as a Medical Practitioner 

Medical Officer in a Regional Public Hospital for 4 years in East London; Moved into Private Practice in one of South Africa’s biggest townships in Cape Town for 10 years. Supported community health and educational projects such as a Home for Disabled Children, HIV/AIDS Support Centre and Mother & Infant Care Clinics for free.

Business/Organisational experience

Worked as Health Executive at the South African Medical Association for 4 years; Worked at the National Department of Health as Director for Maternal, Women’s and Human Genetics for 4 years. Worked at the South African National Blood Service as Chief Executive Officer for 9 years.

Business Experience

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (SANBS) – 9 YEARS

Successfully spearheaded a business turnaround strategy from a loss making operation at R800 million annual revenue to a profit making business at R2, 2 billion annual revenue. Transformational management experience on organisational culture, values and business sustainability strategy.


Non-Executive Directorships of Boards (Current)

Council for Medical Schemes (CMS): Appointed by the Minister of Health, in 3 years became the Deputy Chairman. Appointments to Non-Profit boards such as the Sunflower Fund Board (fund-raising and organ donor recruitment NPO) for over 2 years and the Board of Bulungula Incubator (innovative community development NPO).
